Review of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) by John A — 27 Aug 2011
Surprisingly dull given that this is renowned for its liveliness and charm. It's patriotism porn. This American propaganda might be what the country needed when it was released during WWII, but now it comes off as exhausting.
Also, Cohan is an incredibly unlikable person who, judging from the film, didn't deserve any of his fame. Some of the musical numbers are good, but there are too many of them. The film also proves that Cagney is a one trick pony.
He isn't great outside of gangster pictures. If I were a foreigner and I saw this film, I wouldn't think very highly of the United States afterward.
