Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Ranil I — 25 Jul 2008
The film is a coming-of-age story about two teenage boys taking a road trip with a woman in her late twenties. The film is set against the backdrop of the political and economic realities of present-day Mexico, specifically at the end of the uninterrupted seventy-year line of Mexican presidents from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, and the rise of the opposition headed by Vicente Fox.
I know there was some political story behind this movie, it wasn't just about the "self-discovery" which the main characters went through, which you would notice if you paid attention to the background of the scenes and the type of individuals the main characters met on their road trip. But, I don't think Alfonso (the director) really pointed out much about the political happenings and I'm not Mexican so I'm not fully familiar with what happened.
Overall, it's an alright movie. If you take it too literally, you may miss the point of the movie. Also, the movie is definitely for a mature audience and not for the faint of heart! There is pervasive nudity, graphic sex and full frontals of Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. Let's just say its a raw movie with more than you may be expecting!
