Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Paul K — 29 Mar 2009
Quite frankly the most honest, open movie about the relationship between sex/drugs and teenagers I have ever seen, basically the best "coming of age" movie I have ever seen. It is extremely funny but also extremely sad.
It is a film about growing up with an overwhelming tone of death and decay. How does this work? Because the Cuaron brothers wrote an amazing script and Alfonso Cuaron is one of the best directors working today.
Cuaron uses long shots and hand-held camera work to keep a feel of uneasiness and to show the characters as they grow slowly into the men they will become. Each shot is perfect, showing them grow up a little in every shot, and the acting is top notch.
This film is not only a coming-of-age film but also a film about class disparity, and about the decay of Mexico. It is rare to see a film with so many layers and so much to say, it is a work of perfection.
Every coming-of-age film should aspire to be even half as good this. Please do yourself a favor and see this film.
