Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Mikael K — 23 Aug 2010
"Y tu mamá también" has gained a lot of attention because of it's daring presentation of sexuality, but it's by no means a cheap excercise in exploitation one could assume. It's a smart and bold exploration of sexuality, yes, but has many additional thematic goals that turn it a compelling and substantial movie.
The story is about two teenagers who go on a road trip with an older woman. Throughout the trip the characters get deeper and their interaction less and less conventional and all the time more intimate. And even as the focus is apparewntly in character drama the viewer is faced with depictions of social problems highlighted by the main character's often very priviledged problems.
The tone is very lightweight and comical throughout the fim, but it disquises a contemplative and serious core full of thoughtful analysis. The result is a funny and entertaining as well as memorable story brought to life wit gutsy acting and innovative directing.
