Review of XXY (2007) by Todd D — 31 Oct 2008
An amazing film! The story of a 15 year old hermaphrodite (who embodies the physical appearance of a female, yet still has both male and female genitalia) who is reaching the point in her life where she is discovering sex, and the trouble it brings about.
Raised by supportive but worried and protective parents, who moved her after birth from Argentina to a remote location in Paraguay to protect her, her mother invites a surgeon and his family over to visit and meet the girl in prospects to give her the surgery to determine her sexuality.
When the girl becomes involved sexually with the surgeon's son, questions arise as to how they should determine what to do with her... The film is wonderfully acted, with a beautiful script and unique storyline, and there are several levels to the heartbreaking situations that arise, including a shattering scene featuring the surgeon and his son.
Very much not a movie for everyone, it does play on many levels and one must be open-minded to the sexuality on screen, but easily one of the best films of the year!
