Review of XXY (2007) by Toni R — 19 Aug 2010
Yet another film I'm not sure could have survived in America. Somehow, Boys Cry Tough and Brokeback Mountain were rewarded in a big way, but even those were not as raw as XXY.
It's basically a bit of the story of a hermaphrodite in Uruguay (Argentinan film). It's done in a realistic manner, nothing to laugh at or be afraid of, but since it's different, I suspect that's what would happen. Brokeback Mountain is a great story but mostly you just hear people cringing about the few seconds of direct homosexuality.
Watching this made me think a few things: One, humanitarianism is never a bad idea and two: I should have been a marine biologist. The ocean and saving sea turtles in a shack by myself? Priceless.
