Review of XX/XY (2002) by Mad M — 13 Jan 2010
You would think that, at some point, I would begin to learn that just because a movie has someone you like acting in it does not mean that it's going to be a good film. Yet it seems I never do learn this fact and this movie is more proof of that.
I watched it because of, yes, Mark Ruffalo - that's the only reason. The first 30-40 minutes was just awful and I kept debating whether to turn the movie off or to continue it..but I stuck with it and it did get gradually better but never better enough to make me want to rate this movie higher than a 4/10.
What a completely messed up story and relationship between these three people. I mean, man. It really was pretty screwed up. How can anyone find such a relationship to be a healthy or attractive thing? I certainly found it to be none of the above.
It sort of seemed like 'Coles' just wanted what he couldn't have and would rather pursue happiness than obtain happiness. (I will admit, Mark Ruffalo looked amazing in this movie, as he always does.
) I like some pretty depressing and messed up movies but this was just too much and definitely not for me.
