Review of Game Over, Man! (2018) by Mad M — 24 Mar 2018
I'm sure this movie will get some bad reviews -- but I actually think it has what it takes to become cult favorite. It's really fast-paced (if they released a four hour director's cut it would create new comedy-art film genre, I promise you), but it's because they are trying to fit so many things in.
Don't think of this as a film that is trying to appeal to you so much as a chance for some funny guys to create the best improv scenarios and film them on the highest budget possible. When viewed that way it becomes really fun.
They don't shirk from intensity - they explore fights for domination and life-or-death fighting scenes with a sort of starkness that I wasn't expecting, but that makes it so much better. They pay homage to the writing of old Sandler and Ferrel classics, but they do it their own way.
It wasn't marketed very well -- it's not "the Goonies save the day" it's "the Goonies meets Jessica Jones and save the day," a really important distinction. Watch it in your basement with friends who can handle movies like Jackass and let yourself laugh, okay?
