Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) by Ian B — 25 Apr 2015
Bryan Singer's long awaited return to the X-Men franchise gives us one of the most unique entires in the series. It's something that serves as both a sequel to his original two X-Men films, and the recent prequel, First Class.
And thanks to the introduction of time travel they're able to clean up a lot of the mess left by the awful X-Men 3. There are plenty of characters and stories to juggle here, but Singer manages to find a nice balance between past and present.
Some characters are underused and there's a surprising lack of action compared to the previous films. Still, Singer manages to keep the pace moving, giving us a few good twists along the way and thankfully returning some of the humour to the series.
Of course the highlight is getting to see the original and prequel casts together in the same film. The performances are all top notch, and it effectively moves the First Class story forward, while wrapping up the original series quite nicely.
After a few bumps in the road it's great to see this franchise back on track. It may not be perfect, but it's still one of the better, and more original, superhero flicks in recent memory.
