Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by Kevtheobald — 29 May 2016
Not sure I agree with overloaded action so much as disappointing action. Civil War showed you can pack in a large amount of action and make it work. XMA delivered average at best in terms of action.
The acting was very mixed. Some of that was scripting issues, but some of what just not great acting. Olivia Munn was forgettable as Psylocke. Thankfully, Evan Peters continues to do a wonderful job as Quicksilver.
The big issue most had from the trailers was Apocalypse and he was not horrible, but not impressive. I blame that more on the director and writers.
There were some other issues I had with the director and writers. Not going to spoil the movie, but when see the scene with the arrow used, it was bad. Michael Fassbender did a great job acting in it, but the choices made by the director made roll my eyes.
The special effects was a mixed bag. There was times when it felt like a video game and other times it was awesome.
In the end, I would say unless you are a big fan of The X-Men, you should skip seeing this at theaters.
It was not bad enough to kill the franchise, but Fox should seriously consider letting Marvel take back the franchise and just pay Fox a fee every time they use the X-Men.
