Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by Dkminus — 26 May 2016
X-Men Apocalypse has a lot of great moments in it. Overall, it's a fun film! And yet, my feelings leaving the theater were just so-so. The visuals are great, though as always in these films, some moments are very obviously CG. The story was just okay - nothing very original or creative. They didn't try to stretch themselves at all when it came to the plot or dialogue. Also, the action largely wasn't very satisfying. With few exceptions, I feel like Singer doesn't know how to make combat with these kinds of powers interesting. In fact, in combat, most of the characters seem to forget what their powers really are.
On the plus side, the characters are fun and well portrayed. Watching them interact with each other and have a good time is a delight! Quicksilver outdoes himself. As amusing as he was in DoFP, he's much better here! And the young X-Men do an excellent job as replacements for their older versions (some are even better).
Anyway, it's worth seeing, but it's far less than it could be.
