Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by Peter W — 08 Sep 2018
Due to the silly design of Apocalypse and the bad reviews, despite seeing and enjoying most of the X-Men films before it, I didn't see X:Men Apocalypse in theaters. Man, did I miss out! It's one of the best X-Men films and deeply rewarding for longtime fans of the comics and cartoon.
I really don't get all the hate. Singer is having a lot of fun here, particularly with the Quicksilver character, played wonderfully again by everyone's favorite psycho from American Horror Story, Evan Peters.
(Spoiler alert) Watching him zip around the school, saving all the mutants was a joy. And I am not a person who usually enjoys CGI. I would much prefer manmade costumes and lots of goop. But the way Singer imagined the scenes here, including the incredible climax in the desert with Magneto and Apocalypse, is inspired.
Plus, just the idea of Apocalypse himself: this ancient, godlike mutant -- the original mutant, if you will -- causing all our favorite X-Men to squirm and shift in new ways. It's a fantastic film and my favorite in the series since X2.
