Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by B R — 23 Mar 2017
X-Men Apocalypse is a very good superhero movie; especially recommended for fans of the long-running series of X-Men movies. An A-.
Directed by Bryan Singer (who directed X-Men, X2, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: Days of Future Past); once again starring James McAvoy as Professor Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto; is set in 1983, 10 years after events of Future Past and 20 years before events of X-Men.
Previous characters from First Class/Future Past also returns (Havok, Beast, Mystique,Quicksilver) in this movie; as well as inroducing younger versions of Jean Grey, Storm, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler.
The main villain, Apocalypse; is the world's oldest mutant from ancient times, awoken after millenia of deep sleep, possessing near-unlimited powers of destruction, and want to wipe humanity and start on a clean slate.
The drama and relationship between characters, especially involving.
The X-Men, friendship between Professor X and Magneto, and the sad/tragic story of anti-hero Magneto, are very well-done and heartfelt. Standout performance will be Michael Fassbender as Magneto. You will sympathize with his tragedy.
The action sequence is good, with a standout action sequence involving Quicksilver, just as in Future Past; although the final confrontation between X-Men and Apocalypse towards the end is a bit anti-climactic.
The plot is also a bit heavy and multi-layered; sometimes hard to follow. A basic knowledge of comic lore and backstory of previous movies will help a bit in understanding this movie.
Overall, a very good movie. An A-.
