Review of Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014) by Preston L — 03 Sep 2015
Wyrmwood is an Australian zombie movie. It tells about a brother and sister who are trying to survive the zombie apocalypse, not only from the zombies but also the Australian government. They start out separate and don't know the other one is alive and the film follows their separate stories.
Things I Liked:
The Tone. This film was one going in I thought I was gonna regret watching. I was surprised to find that this film did not take itself too seriously and allowed the movie to just be ridiculous fun. Think Evil Dead meets Mad Max. It's campy, it's action-packed, it's over the top, but most importantly of all it's stupid fun! I love these cheesy movies that should be the worst thing ever but because they seemingly know how bad they are they embrace the chaos and become fun.
The Originality. My favorite zombie movies are ones that take the genre and do something new with it. These zombies have traits that are unique to the movie, and I can't tell you more about those because the plot involves them. The movie makes the zombies more than just wandering aimless monsters and the way they twist and turn with the genre, while absurd, is what makes the movie interesting and fun.
Things I Didn't Like:
The Dialogue. The dialogue is so bad. This is beyond cheesy, the things these people say...I wonder if the writer just watched a conversation of a group of 12 year olds who were retelling a different zombie movie and thought "yeah! That's how people talk!" The things these characters say makes them sound like caricatures and the dialogue does nothing to advance the story half the time. The script is bad.
The Plot. The plot goes nowhere and the story is sort of anti-climactic in the end. The story never goes to a point that you get supremely interested in what happens next. You just sort of wander along and any scene that doesn't have action is rather bland and monotonous.
Overall. Overall the movie falls into one of those so bad that it's fun categories. The dialogue is stupid, the plot is kind of lame, but the action, the originality, and the fact that the movie just embraces how ridiculous it is makes the whole thing actually a lot of fun. I found this movie to be a lot of fun and I was really surprised to find that I ended up excited by it and really glad I watched it. It's not for everyone but if you like crappy B-horror movies and cheesy action films you will probably really like this one.
