Review of Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007) by Kervin S — 16 Jan 2009
I absolutely loved the movie. My husband was the one who first told me to watch it but I kept on delaying watching it because I wasn't in the mood for another suicide-related theme (even after just re-reading "Veronika Decides to Die").
After watching it though, I'd say I should've watched it earlier. It was funny and dream/nightmare-like weird. Their purgatory is a better place there when you think about how purgatory is described both in religion and in books.
This kind of purgatory is heaven then if we were really true because despite the fact that they're there for eternity, living lives almost the same as the ones they have when they're alive, but still a little bit worst, they seem to have endless supplies of booze and nicotine! The characters in the movie were funny; I especially liked Eugene and his family.
I also found Will Arnett's character name - Messiah, hilarious. I also liked the scene where Mikal and Zia "realized" their love for each other was in a beach filled with used condoms and other drug paraphernalia.
It was a trippy journey for me and despite the suicide and purgatory theme, was still a feel-good movie in the end.
