Review of Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007) by Lukas Z — 29 Feb 2012
What happens to people who commit suicide? Do they go to heaven or hell as they deserve to or is there another place just for them? This is the concept of 'Wristcutters - A Love Story', a quirky little indie film that has a interesting idea but an amateur script.
After offing himself, our protagonist Zia finds himself in a world much like ours, except filled with everyone else who decides to end their own life. A place where no one smiles which appears to be filmed 70s style to give it a more bleak feel.
The movie is essentially a road trip movie as Zia ventures to find his ex-girlfriend (the reason he gave up on life) who has recently arrived in this dreaded world. The story is just an excuse for us to meet the interesting cast of characters that Zia meets along the way.
The film tries to give insight on most of the characters (even minor ones) by showing us how each one offed themselves. It is the script that ultimately brings down the rest of the film. It has un-engaging and dull conversations that tend to make everything feel as lame as the world they live in is.
Because of that, watching the whole film might be irritating unless you can easily look past this fault. With that in mind, Wristcutters is watchable and its indie soundtrack benefits as well.
