Review of Wreck-It Ralph (2012) by Rick R — 07 May 2014
Wreck-It Ralph (2012).
We've seen a lot of movies that promote video games. This one isn't really one of them. I went into this, not really expecting much, but I ended up enjoying the movie.
Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) is the destructive villain of an old 8-Bit video game at the arcade, Fix-It Felix, where Ralph tries to tear down a building, the hero, Felix (Jack McBrayer) fixes it back up. Once Felix fixes the building back up, the inhabitants give him a medal and throw Ralph off of the building.
Needless to say, Ralph is in group therapy to cope with these negative feelings. He's spurned by his fellow game characters and is forced to live in the dump. After not being invited to the game's 30th anniversary party, he confronts the game characters who tell him that if he can win a medal like Felix, that they will let him move into the building.
Ralph crosses over to some other games, meeting up with other favorite game characters. Although his game characters don't like him, the fact that he's "Gone Turbo" frightens them. Also, the fact that he's not there to destroy the building, Felix can't fix anything, making the game appear like it's not working properly. This dooms the game to be unplugged.
Ralph finds a first-person shooter game where he can win a medal. Disguised as one of the giant bug-killing soldiers, run by tough-talking Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph scores a medal, but ends up flying off into a candy racing game.
Ralph meets Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) who want to race in the game, but King Candy (Alan Tudyk) and the other racers won't let her because she's a Glitch. Meanwhile, there was a bug stow-away that is growing under the candy-coated ground of the game.
