Review of Working Girl (2009) by Kevin D — 11 Jul 2010
Mike Nichols' stab at the 80's romantic workplace satire. The cast was excellent: Melanie Griffith's hair, Joan Cusack's hair, Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt, Sigourney Weaver, and Kevin Spacey.
Melanie Griffith and her hair played a cubicle worker with high aspirations. Her coworkers get in the way of her ambitions, so she needs to find a job suitable for her. She took a job as Sigourney Weaver's assistant and started to make some strides as she gained confidence in herself. Griffith came up with an idea that sounded so brilliant in her head that she had to pitch it to her boss, Weaver.
Weaver seemed to be impressed with the idea, but didn't know if the other bigwigs in the area would like the idea. A little later, the Weaver character went on vacation and ended up breaking her leg in a skiing accident. That allowed the Griffith character to expand upon her idea through some help from the Harrison Ford character.
The movie started off very good in the beginning, despite being like a female version of Wall Street and like a business world version of Broadcast News. The movie carried along steadily in the middle and got a little dull, but things really picked up with about a half hour left. The plot twists started piling up and all of a sudden I was emotionally involved with the movie and I was literally being thrilled by the motion picture.
This funny little movie had some phony romantic plots, but it worked well as a film that exposed unfair business practices. The acting was pretty good, especially the performance by Weaver. Griffith also stood out in her role as the courageous and determined title character.Overall, this was an enjoyable movie that got very, very good near the end.
