Review of Working Girl (1988) by Max W — 30 Jun 2009
This movie takes place in the late 80s, when the goal was to keep your hair as big as possible, unless, of course, you have a "mind for business and a bod for sin," in which case you should have a shorter (but still huge) do.
The film reads as sort of a reverse, Cinderella-infused 9 to 5: in that film, three secretaries plot revenge on their boss for being a dick. In this one, one secretary plots revenge on her boss for stealing her idea.
Griffith (sometimes sexy, mostly just fine), Cusack and Weaver (clever and huge in the shoulders) all got Oscar noms for this, so it must have been kind of a weak year. It feels like no one in this movie really commits (except Cusack, who based on her eye makeup alone should be commited).
The story's all right but it feels overlong and not sure of what it wants to be. Comedy? Workplace drama? Biting satire? Not sure. In any case, I didn't really bite.
