Review of Words and Pictures (2014) by Belle D — 09 Jun 2017
Looking at the Reviews it could be said that this "film" (it's digital video at 24-fps, no film involved) is both more & less of what it's about. An "academic" film in an academic setting invites pretension, starting with the script. Two fine leads give it a go - and the supporting teen cast, too. But, eh ... Really, this is a well-worn story paradigm of a man with problems meeting a woman who's not interested who challenges him. That makes her more attractive, she comes around, and then saves the man (from his problems). In other words, an aspirational high flown art & lit move that's really a formulaic guy gets girl who didn't know she wanted him. Something like that ...
And yet, in the end, the audience does get a glimpse of the challenge of inspiring "to change the world" today's wifi iPhone kids - here, the affluent ones - and the value of programs that are the first cut when budgets are tight. In that, the production succeeds.
Not bad ... just not terrific.
