Review of Wordplay (2006) by Andrew O — 06 Dec 2006
Most of this documentary was pretty uninteresting in my opinion. I didn't really care about the mundane lives of all these random people that we speak with for minutes and minutes.
The Stewart and Clinton moments were mildly entertaining, but they only last for a total of about 8 minutes. I DID like the parts where they show the crossword constructors describing and showing how they put together puzzles is kind of neat.
However, the best part is easily the last 40 minutes or so, once the competition begins. Because we've now got a vested interest in about 5 people and to watch the tension and nervousness of this surprisingly exciting competition is almost nail-biting.
IN THE DVD EXTRAS, there's a little, 15-minute documentary about the best 5 NYT crossword puzzles ever. THis was really interesting.
