Review of Wordplay (2006) by Steph K — 01 Jan 2007
Directed by Patrick Creadon.
Starring Will Shortz, Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton, Mike Mussina, Merl Reagle, Ken Burns.
Mostly regarded as a documentary about Paul Shortz, the New York Times crossword editor and founder of the competition that annually gathers the best puzzle solvers across America, I was more enamored by those regular people who make it a daily ritual in their lives. They are not camera-shy, even professing that this seemingly solitary pastime is the stuff of nerds. But the movie is inspirational. Proof that even celebrities like Bill Clinton, Jon Stewart and the Indigo Girls were game enough to offer their take on the subject. ?Wordplay? is also as exciting as a movie with a climactic ending for who would?ve thought that a crossword competition could be so nerve-wracking?
Best Scene: The championship final three.
