Review of Wordplay (2006) by Craig B — 23 Mar 2010
As an avid amateur puzzler and self-professed docujunky, I quite liked Wordplay. The film dives deep into the world of the New York Times crossword puzzle and tells us all about its history, enlightens us on how crossword puzzles are created, and gives us glimpses of the lives of the people who are attracted to the enigmatic little brain teaser that shows up in our newspapers every morning.
And just like Spellbound (about the national spelling bee) and Word Wars (about competitive scrabble competitions,) Wordplay is way more fascinating than its subject matter would indicate. I was floored to discover that the best crossword enthusiasts in the world can solve a typical New York Times puzzle in less than two minutes and thirty seconds.
I can't even write that fast, let alone think my way through a puzzle while doing it! Wordplay is a lot of fun.
