Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Adam M — 06 Sep 2018
I'm not usually a big fan of documentaries. I think even the best of them usually struggle to find a good structure or narrative. Won't You Be My Neighbor? is really no exception. There isn't much of an arc, its often just facts and information.
But when your subject is Fred Rodgers, it is impossible not to be charming. This is so heartwarming and lovely. It made me tear up and laugh and just have a really great time at a movie. The best parts of the film are when the documentary stops and it's just some uninterrupted Mr.
Rodgers. He was just such a genuine man. The film even has the guts to briefly touch on his hesitance to let a member of his cast come out of the closet, which I appreciate, though it's a very gentle criticism that is forgiven almost as quickly as it's brought up.
Very worth watching though, I loved it.
