Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Robin M — 06 Jul 2018
I wasn't actively listening when my younger siblings were watching Mr. Rogers way back when. At the time, I was busy adolescenting, and the background sounds of Henrietta Pussycat-meow-meow, Trolley tooting its way into the Land of Make Believe, as well as the (seemingly) painfully slow opening song / sweater donning / sneaker tying by Mr.
Rogers, left me shaking my head about how my sibs sat glued to the set mesmerized by the show day after day. Now I understand. And boy, did I miss out in not growing up with him. I wish I'd learned from him back then what I took away from this movie today.
I cried, and so did others in the theatre, gauging by the sniffles around me. I cried because I was blessed by glimpses of pure Goodness that defined this man. It's beyond words-mine, anyway. You have to see it for yourself to appreciate the movie and the Man.
I left the theatre vowing to be a better person-kinder, more patient, one given to truly hearing and responding to others with an open heart. I hope you'll give yourself the gift of seeing this movie.
It will show you the soul of Mr. Rogers, but it will also reveal to you Yourself, and it just may be the impetus that makes you go out and help to heal the world. Like he did. Amazing. Transformative.
