Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Jesse D — 22 Jul 2018
More than a decade after his death -- it's like he was with us every step of the way.
Won't You Be My Neighbor? adds more beauty to the already inspiring legacy of Mr. Rogers.Calling this film a tribute to the man doesn't exemplify enough the story it unfolds before our eyes. It's so much more than 'just a tribute'. It's heartfelt... Authentic... Genuine... Everything that Fred Rogers both accomplished and endured throughout his life is pulled out of the closet and wrapped around you as if it were one of his famous cardigans.
Just like the topics he would broach, this trip into the Neighborhood wasn't always easy or feel-good.
The audience is allowed to travel with Mister Rogers as his anxiety, fear, and self-doubt are examined at every turn of his life. From childhood, to the beginning of his show, and even in the final moments of his life -- Fred Rogers never fully knew or believed that he was good enough, that he was lovable.
For a man who dedicated his life to telling children that they are special... they they are lovable and worth loving to be full of so much doubt and pain is heartbreaking. The realness of these moments throughout the film will rip at your very soul and move you in ways that perhaps a film hasn't been able to do before.
Then again, this is so much more than a film. It's a journey and yet another chance to learn from the worthy, loved, and fantastic Fred Rogers.
There are a plethora of great stories from friends, cast members, and family alike. Stories from the set. Stories that will make you laugh and cry. Deeply personal stories that maybe weren't ever going to see the light of day.
Overall -- Won't You Be My Neighbor is unlike any other. A rare glimpse into an icon that isn't shaded and doesn't hold back. If anything, the genuineness will endure you to Mr. Rogers even more.
To the man, the one and only Fred Rogers. You were a guiding light in a sea of darkness. You are my friend, you are special to me. You were one of a kind. Worthy of love and to be loved.
