Review of Won't Back Down (2012) by Marina N — 26 Jan 2013
Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal are terrific actress and I always catch myself expecting a deeply-felt thought-provoking movie when I watch a movie with them in it. "Won't back down" is a little disappointing in that respect.
The story of two mothers uniting to build a school that would care for the needs of their duslexic children is an inspirational tale about what what rocks mothers can and will move for their children.
Apart from that it sheds some light on the working situation of teachers in the US, which might not be straight fact telling but is still insightful. Overall, judging from the angle of similar movies centered on a hero in a troubled educational system (and there are some covering this subject), this movie rather poorly manages to light that fire and ignite inspiration.
Specifically for this reason, it is a true disappointment for the big screen and I would have regretted paying for it. Nevertheless, it remains solid Saturday afternoon TV material.
