Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Bernardo T — 17 Dec 2017
Wonderfully directed and shot, the story is, for the most part, a well written affair with depth, passion, blistering action and great characters who have dialogue that is a mix of drama and humour, creating the perfect tone for Wonder Woman's first solo film and the dark era that it is set in.
I don't really know much about the character herself, but I really liked this incarnation (played fantastically by Gadot) which managed to show her as innocent, compassionate and kind, as well as fierce, strong and powerful showing that, indeed, it is possible for a woman to be both.
It's not perfect, though. The romance angle between Steve and Diana seems very rushed and squashed in simply because people expected it (Gadot and Pine have great chemistry, it's a shame it wasn't put to better use); the CGI and wirework is abundant and, although somewhat necessary, was overused and a bit too obvious at times; and the finale, although it certainly had its moments, didn't quite have the oomph I'd hoped for.
All in all, however, it's a helluva an entertaining ride and certainly DC's best live-action effort to-date. Here's to hoping they have finally managed to get their footing.
