Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Jonathan B — 30 Jun 2017
After some plodding and hugely disappointing DC Comic character movies, Wonder Woman promised a great deal but for me, only partially delivered. Like too many of its predecessors, it takes itself far too seriously and seems to forget that the central premise is quite ludicrous.
The movie is at its best when there are moments of levity and humour which are mostly constructed around Amazonian princess Diana's lack of social awareness. Gal Gadot's portrayal of the superhero is passable but I found many of the big spectacle fight scenes rather tedious.
Setting much of the action during World War I gives the movie a gritty, tough atmosphere and marks it out as different to many of the Marvel stable. There is much to enjoy about Wonder Woman but this is a genre that I feel is past its peak and in order to stand out, superhero films need to be better than this.
