Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Co P — 05 Jun 2017
I've only walked out of two movies in my life and this would have been the third had I not been sorely tempted to see how Jenkins butchers the end. The amount of exposition is ridiculous. A sweet peek into Diana's past as a way of introduction is suddenly crippled by a long slog of boring, hideous CG plastered backstory that underlines the main points we need to watch out for in the rest of the film in sharpie as though the audience were all children. The casting of the Amazons was believable enough if one were to believe the Ancient Greeks were all blonde and blue-eyed. Gadot's Diana is very much modern world engenue, burning with her mission, clear in her goal. Gadot is actually great, as is Pine and their chemistry works very well.... when they appear to be left to their own devices, not perfectly positioned and instructed to "now act sad. Now act romantic" etc ad nauseum.
The jokes are fine, though the obvious ones fall so flat they could travel through the floor. I wanted to like the supporting characters, but they seemed so arbitrary and ridiculously one dimensional, there was little point.
There is a fair amount to really like about this film, which makes its faults even more enraging. It should be good. It deserved to be good. Why couldn't someone have spent a little extra time in the storyboard room just ironing out some of the creases and preaching?
Also, we know what action looks like. We don't need every punch and kick in slow motion just to appreciate how well it was choreographed.
