Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
First things first, the feminist approach to this film is fantastic and the strongest aspect of the film. Jenkins and Gadot are the beginning of appropriating the female form for the better in arguably one of the strongest depictions of the female form in some time.
However, this aspect almost blinds the actual production itself because unfortunately this film is as formulaic and predictable as the usual superhero films. The final act is a mess, it borrows heavily from Captain America: First Avenger, BVS and the finale of Man of Steel.
The film is astonishingly reliable on CGI and it ruins what could've been far more immersive. The performances all round are terrific, supporting cast alone from Pine and in particularly Davis (who is a revelation) and of course the scene stealer Wright.
Gadot is perfect as the titular role and adds such a bigger scope to a niche character but the reveal of the villain didn't hold up and throughout I found myself one step ahead of the film which treated its audience as the lowest common denominator at times.
