Review of Wonder Woman (2009) by Karly A — 01 Aug 2009
While, like all of the DCU movies, the complex plot is packed into too short a space, this is a really, well, wonderful, short film. The stylized animation and character designs are distinct and appealing, and the writers serve up an origin that makes sense.
The biggest treat here is the voice acting. Kerri Russell gives a decent performance as the Amazon princess, but she is completely overshadowed by Alfred Molina's deliciously villainous performance and Nathan Fillion.
.. being Nathan Fillion. There is a lot to like here in the short but sweet origin story of the most famous superheroine, even if it feels a bit rushed. Very impressive is the post-feminist message, which was handled very carefully, and to great effect.
It's too easy for hamhanded writers to make Wonder Woman a psycho-feminist, but this movie knew exactly where to draw the lines between the sexes.
