Review of Woman of the Year (1942) by Samantha S — 14 Jul 2008
Three stars for the good chemistry between Hepburn & Tracy, which only strengthened in the films that followed, and for the interesting premise (this was 1942!) Unfortunately, the story wasn't executed as well as I'd hoped.
.. the adoption sub-plot is just awkward, and I really dislike the arc of Hepburn's character. If taken out of context, the kitchen scene would be my favorite in the movie, but I hate the hugely dramatic feminine transformation that supposedly takes place, in which Tess's "shrew" is "tamed.
" The power struggle throughout the film is so interesting; why couldn't it appropriately end with more of a compromise between the two?
