Review of Woman of the Year (1942) by Todd S — 26 Jul 2008
The first half of "Woman of the Year" captures the beginning of Tracy and Hepburn's real life relationship, and, strange to say, I don't think I've ever seen two actors with more intense chemistry.
The film's gender politics, though, particularly in the second half, are somewhat off-putting: Tracy is shown to have the better of the argument (even though he should've known what he was getting into), culminating in an adoption subplot that is both heavy handed and implausible.
It would be unfair, though, to characterize the film as conservative (even by today's standards), and the end is forward looking without any real hand-wringing about an affront to the patriarchy.
