Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Dale J — 03 Apr 2015
I found "Woman in Gold" incredibly touching. I will never forget "Schindler's List" --- the tone of this new film is on a different level -- telling the real story centering around the painting with no films of Dacca etc.
, but basically showing that at least some justice occurs in the world sometimes. Of course there is no price that can ever repay the Jews for what happened to them at the hands of the Nazis. The Woman in Gold is only a pebble in the sea of stolen art.
Austria's compliance for the return of The Woman in Gold appears to be just a political action in the end, but neverthe less it happened. How many films of concentration camps would it have taken to get more of the confiscated art back to its real owners.
Of course so much of the collections of great museums of the world has been stolen from prior nations' civilizations. I thought the movie was perfectly done and the characters were perfect. The young inexperienced attorney especially -- he wasn't supposed to be a poised super sophisticated person.
Helen Mirren was again terrific. It pleased me that the storyline only occasionally flashed back to the horrors of the Jewish persecution, and yet there was hardly a moment when it was there and all around mentally.
What a wonderful film. Tell all your friends.
