Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Wesley B — 03 Aug 2015
"Don't steal" is about as old a lesson as there is, but Woman in Gold takes what could be an abstraction - the Nazi confiscation of lifetimes of personal possessions from prominent Jewish families - and boils it down to the essence of one woman's search for justice.
It helps that Helen Mirren has the genius mix of steely vulnerability to pull off the main role, and that Ryan Reynolds makes his lunky charms into the film's unlikely emotional center. Ultimately, though, the storied fight of the woman who forced the Austrians to relinquish their prized Klimt doesn't need the star power to be truly effective.
The arc of history does, indeed, bend towards justice.
