Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Gimly M — 04 Aug 2015
One foot somewhat in my wheelhouse and the other firmly and all together out of it, Woman in Gold is a prepossessing biopic that far outclasses similarly-veined "The Monuments Men". The story in and of itself is of course fascinating in its fact, unfortunately the most gripping parts are the many flashbacks to Austria in Nazi upheaval, and these take up only a fraction of the film's runtime.
The acting is of course fantastic, but that comes as little surprise given the cast, and none of the three leads give anything like a career-defining performance. Woman in Gold is chiefly a courtroom drama, and in this genre it does not excel, but that doesn't stop it from being, technically, at its core, a good film (albeit one that will never appeal to many inclinations).
