Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Ian G — 29 Nov 2015
One of those add a dame to the film and the watchability of said film increases considerably. Woman in Gold is the second the Nazi's stole my artwork and I want it back films to come out in recent years following on the heals of the disappointing Monuments Men, in this particular instance focusing on one particular significant piece that has a huge personal value to Mirrens character since a member of her family was the inspiration of the piece.
Very much a wannabe prestige film that somehow ended up in the depths of summer, Mirren is the hero of the piece as always delivering a reliable performance, Holmes barely registers in the thankless role of the stay at home mom, and Ryan Renoylds is just there to deliver legal chargin in Mirrens shadow to help her reconnect with her roots along the way to reclaim the painting.
Between it being yet another WW2 history lesson film and the fact that despite what happens to her family during the war Mirrens characters family comes from a well to do family, it is a little tricky to connect or at least relate to the plight of the central character despite Mirren being a nice presence on screen.
Average if dull.
