Review of Wolf Creek (2005) by Simona B — 19 Apr 2010
Wolf Creek is the sort of torture-porn that makes you hate the entire genre. The film is well acted, well filmed (if you don't mind the handheld camera too much) and well directed; it is impossible to watch. It's like The Hills Have Eyes with twenty times the brutality, which, thanks to director Greg McLean actually looks real. The actors deliver credible performances and look like people you might know (as opposed to Hollywood actors with slasher film makeup), and that l'enfant terrible McLean makes sure you begin to care for the characters before he subjects them to the most revolting violence.
It was uncomfortable to watch and I have no idea what on earth I was thinking when I was getting that DVD, because I had been warned ... it must have been the Bradley John Murdoch trial in the NT that got me intrigued. Curiosity kicked the cat in the guts.
