Review of Wolf Creek 2 (2013) by David L — 12 Apr 2016
I didn't even know there was a sequel being made, and then all of a sudden it's out on DVD. I assumed that meant it was a rapidly produced, and poorly scripted attempt at another Wolf Creek movie, but to my surprise this was pretty bloody good.
Unlike the first, there is no time wasted on an epic build up, which is a good decision given we all know what this storyline is about. We're straight into the action and it's not long before the first few gallons of blood are spilt, and boy it's in true Torture porn style.
This movie doesn't hold back and having been known for its brutal and gory slayings, it's really lived up to its label. Mick Taylor is a real bad ass Aussie, seemingly friendly on appearance but sadistically violent when crossed, and sometimes even just when he chooses to be.
He's the star of the film, and there are no good guy heroes. He's just fed a new batch of hitchhikers to mutilate and we don't really get to know any of them that well. The nearest we get to a rooting for a goody is halfway through the film when the token Brit enters the fray.
It's like a film version of the TV game show 'Nightmare' when contestants are thrown into the ring to try and survive and when they're caught, a new contender comes into play. I find it hard to believe that this is still based on true events as they are just so far fetched, but whether they are exaggerated beyond extreme or not, I'm never going to get myself stranded in the Australian outback - You'll be lucky if you even get me to Australia now.
Not the most notorious series of horror films as a whole, but there's most definitely a notorious villain in the making here with what is a very unexpected, but credible follow up.
