Review of Witness (1985) by Dave B — 19 Mar 2008
"Witness", or, to use the title in German, "Zeuge," is a gripping and at times heart-warming film. It focuses on what happens when a young Amish boy is the only witness to a vicious murder while travelling in Philadelphia.
The movie provides a mostly sympathetic and fascinating depiction of Amish life and some insight into their way of thinking. It is very well acted. The only thing that disappointed me was seeing how susceptible Rachel Lapp was to the charms of the detective, including one scene that could be edited out.
But otherwise, the film is excellent, and provides a powerful contrast between the Amish way of life and the harshness of the outside world.
