Review of Witness (1985) by I Don't Know W — 21 Aug 2011
I will always have a soft spot for any film made and based around South-Eastern Pennsylvania, and this film is no exception.
The film's concept is almost laughable. A police officer is forced to seek refuge in an Amish community? It sounds like it might have been a pitch for the stupidest comedy Adam Sandler's ever done, if he hadn't already made 'Grown-Ups'.
Instead, the makers punch up the tension and permanently adjust the film's tone with a grisly murder in the opening minutes. Thereafter, Weir's obsession with nature occasionally gets away with him, but as he does in almost every film, Harrison Ford's presence is the anchor. In the end, he could step onto a spaceship and admit that he had always been a transsexual alien and you will have bought it.
