Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Julian V — 04 Mar 2008
To my naive American eyes, this played like "Fear and Loathing" but with a more melancholy ending. The story traces two layabout actors' friendship through a series of bizarre episodes, fueled (mostly) by alcohol.
Other drugs come into play, which means the characters' reactions to situations don't always make sense, but you're still able to distill the main point of the film from the offhand comments thrown around in different scenes.
A lot of my friends recommended this movie to me because of the comedic moments, and there are several, but to me, the emotional bits were the most affecting--after seeing what these characters go through, and how they end up, I can't imagine how anyone could turn this film into a drinking game.
