Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Tom W — 14 Sep 2008
Perhaps the finest british comedy ever made.
It's one of those films you either get or don't; there's almost no middle ground. it's endlessly quotabe and has inspired several near-fatal drinking games.
It also shows that Britain wasn't a hip and happening wonderland of Carnaby street, The Beatles and Mini skirts; that was confined to West London.
Uncle Monty is funny but more complex than just comedy-gay, and is probably the best character. Ralph Brown is great as Danny, and it's sad that some the stuff he says makes sense, depending on how drunk/stoned/wired you are when you watch it.
If you don't like it, it probably means you're a bit of a stuffy old git. I rate it as a classic.
