Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Steven I — 09 Mar 2009
I love this film simply because you it's impossible to love it on first viewing. It grows and grows and grows on you, like the mould in Withnail and Marwood's flat. It's dark, it's witty, it's scathing and ultimately futile.
Nothing much happens but it does it with style and elegance. It's dirty in its look and evocative of the era it's set in. Every actor is playing at the top of the game (indeed, I think poor Richard E Grant gave such a career-defining performance in the role that he has been playing watered-down versions of Withnail for the rest of his career).
This movie gets better with each and every viewing, however many times you can quote along to it. It's a genuine classic.
