Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Hugo G — 19 Mar 2010
Some films get by on their special effects, or the twisting machinations of their plot. Some get by on their characters, and it's in to this category that withnail and I falls. Withnail, well-educated and constantly inebriated, is simply a legendary personality leading a fine cast of misfits and outcasts, including the constantly anxious 'I', the grotesque Monty, Danny the drug dealer and a large man known only as Presuming Joe.
Surreal brilliance and highly quotable, enough so that you can ignore a slightly thin plot.
