Review of Withnail & I (1987) by John C — 07 May 2013
An absolute comic masterpiece. The seminal Richard E. Grant movie. Produced by George Harrison. The movie info is a fair summary of the movie, but it misses the unique desperation in Grant as Withnail, a (maybe) actor, at the end of his rope, trying to hang on to the last vestiges of 1969 London through his daily quest for the staples in life--drugs, booze, someone to kill whatever is living in the filth pile in the kitchen, clean urine, and a vacation in the country--even if it means letting his gay uncle, Richard Griffiths, know that possibly Marwood might have the hots for him.
Written and directed by Bruce Robinson, a true masterpiece.
