Review of Withnail & I (1987) by Ken S — 14 Aug 2011
Cheech and Chong's smarter European cousin, Withnail and I follows the unpredictable musings of two actors, Withnail and Marwood, who are in limbo from the working world. In a grungy state of what appears to be a constant hangover mixed with an unending crashing high, the two actors flee their trashed apartment to Withnail's uncle's country cottage.
The city dweller's interactions with the country folk is humorous and never resorts to the cliche a typical fish out of water story would expect--and it's not a fish-out-of-water movie after all, these two stoners hardly seem to notice the different setting they're in.
The end of the film comes to quite a mature moment that'll will ring true and hard for most of us who are caught between the choice of responsible adulthood and the bliss of recreational drug use.
