Review of Wishmaster (1997) by Kyle J — 28 Sep 2009
This is laid back Wes Craven. Through most of the 90's the horror genre laid pretty dormant. There were no real leaps forward in style of substance. Wes and most of the rest of the auteurs played it safe with things like this.
Wishmaster is not a bad horror movie. Well it's not really a horror movie more of a comedy with a gory twist. It has a cast full of Horror veterans including; Tony Todd (Candy Man) and Robert Englund (Nightmare on Elm Street) as well as a premise sure to deliver on shocking twist deaths and inventive mayhem. A fact cemented by the films 4 sequals.
The gore is satisfying. Although it's date is showing a little as there is little to no CG in the movie, most of the effects are carried out with a certain level of professionalism. The story is barely there and some performances are less than stellar but the pacing is good and you'll have more than a few laughs (some at it's expense.).
Good for a Halloween grab bag.
