Review of Winter's Tale (2014) by Emma B — 14 Feb 2014
As a huge fan of the book, this was on my top 5 list of movies to see this year. I am more than disappointed with the final cut. All the kernels and elements are there. The award winning cast and crew did what they could to salvage anything from this epic book, but it was the Academy Award winning writer turned first time director, Akiva Goldsman, that absolutely ruined it. His direction is some of the worst I've seen and his focus on directing made his usually incredible writing, choppy and over the top schmaltzy.
It has taken 30 years for an adaptation to be made because the book is next to impossible to adapt. I believe that if Goldsman had focused completely on the script, we would have gotten a "Cinderella Man" or "A Beautiful Mind" type of adaptation. But, instead we get a lazy and careless mess that barely resembles the novel at all. This was not a book to put into this first time director's hands.
The film is worth nothing but a passing view once it hits TV, if only to see what Russell Crowe and Colin Farrell are able to do with nothing. Anything else is a waste of your money. Here's hoping someone else gets it right in another 30 years. Final Rating: D-.
